Horse Crippler

Taken in the Davis Mountains. Check out the ant for scale. This was referred to as a "Horse Crippler" by the locals.  They close up in the evening!  Found that out as I set up my camera, had to come back the next day.  Email me if you know more about this type of cactus, it's a beauty, the pic doesn't do it justice... Olympus OM2n camera, Vivitar 90mm f2.5 macro lens.

Per Kendra: This cactus is a cane cholla (Opuntia imbricata).  They are all over the Davis Mountains...

Cactus Flower # 2

Ants Dig the Cactus Flowers

Davis Mountains, April 14, 2010.  1/40s at f16, Nikon D200 & Nikon 105mm macro lens, tripod mounted.  I needed this relatively fast macro fstop & shutter speed to freeze the ants.  They don't stay still for long.  They're antsy!
